How to Develop a Board of Directors

What Do You Need?

Create a clear board member job description based on the strategic plan and skills needed to fulfill the organizational mission. Assess the talent of your current membership to determine the characteristics best able to fill potential gaps.

Look Right Under Your Nose

The right board member for your organization can be right in front of you. People who have been a part of the non-profit organization have clearly exemplified their commitment to the success of the organization. Being asked to join a board of directors might be a great honor to those who already support your mission.

Reach Outside the Organization

Get the word out so that the general public is aware that your organization is looking for new members.

Pick the RIGHT Person

Take the time needed to fill the position with the right person. The chair is better left empty than filled with the wrong candidate.

  1. Find someone who believes in the cause and mission of your non-profit organization. As a result, this individual will be more willing to go out into the community to promote your mission and recruit others to help the cause.
  2. Make sure the individuals you recruit have enough time in their schedule to complete the needs expected of them. Being a member of a board is not a task that should be taken lightly and requires an individual who is willing to remain active.
