Power Kids, “Yes I Can!”

Power KidsFocus: Personal and Family Safety, Public Speaking, Physical Education, Leadership and Teamwork Skills Development, Volunteerism

  • Summary: High school teens receive basic martial arts training to then teach groups of grade school students seven vital self-protection skills in a fun, meaningful, and memorable way. As a result of participating in this physical education and character-building program, high school students learn self-defense moves, create the teaching curriculum and props, and then travel to elementary schools to teach these empowering self-care strategies to young students.

Operation Remember

Focus: Foster Care, The Arts, Health and Human Services, Leadership and Teamwork Skills Development, Volunteerism

  • Summary: Students create scrapbooks for foster children. Students did research to learn about the foster care system and then developed a way to make a positive impact. Foster children don’t normally have “family” photo albums. Now, they have a wonderful, handmade book to collect meaningful pictures and other memory items.

Niagara Escarpment Awareness Team (N.E.A.T.), “Be N.E.A.T., Be Aware”

Focus: Environmental Preservation, Public Speaking, Scientific Research, Leadership and Teamwork Skills Development, Volunteerism

  • Summary: Students representing schools throughout Door County have joined to research and create a presentation using displays, science models and PowerPoint to educate community members on the Escarpment preservation efforts in Door County. The Wisconsin Legislature has designated 2010 as Year of the Escarpment. Professional input has come from local and state environmental groups such as NERN (Niagara Escarpment Resource Network), LNRP (Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership), DCIST (Door County Invasive Species Team), Crossroads at Big Creek, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, CONE (Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment) in Canada and professional mentors.

Crossroads at Big Creek Reforestation

Focus: Environmental Preservation, Scientific Research, Leadership and Teamwork Skills Development, Volunteerism

  • Summary: This project includes youth-led research and active reforestation of a 10-acre plot at Crossroads. Students currently lead this project that will engage hundreds of Door County youth. This project benefits from local and statewide professional environmentalists serving as mentors.

School Service Learning Support in the Classroom

  • Summary: The Volunteer Center is engaged in providing service learning classroom support and project facilitation at Gibraltar High School (in partnership with Friends of Gibraltar) and Sturgeon Bay High School. Youth-led projects include the Teddy Bear Toss providing toy bears for homeless children, making Pine Cone Feeders to benefit zoo animals, Pennies for Pets, Walk in My Shoes, and many more.
